What I Got Up To This Month (February '25)

I feel like I've said this before, but this month sure went by fast, didn't it? Things haven't changed much for me in a personal sense this February, though I am seeing a therapist again, so I suppose it's mostly just business-as-usual. The United States continues to be a dumpster fire run by evil a-holes, so that's occupied a lot of my thoughts, but I've been keeping busy with various games and things. My miscellaneous "best of the rest" list still hasn't been finished and, uh, I'm starting to think I might just never post that. Maybe my mind will change though and I'll write on some of the other stuff I liked last year, but I feel like the moment has passed.

I played the original Doom this month and it was great. I wasn't quite sure what to expect as I've had mixed results when approaching certain older games, but this held up surprisingly well. I think I'm going to try to play all of the Doom games before The Dark Ages comes out and, while I haven't done a writeup on the first game (yet), I'm thinking about putting something together soon.

I played quite a few hours of that Monster Hunter Wilds beta this month and it reminded me why I liked Monster Hunter. I played about thirty hours of Monster Hunter Rise which, while quite a bit of time in a general sense, really isn't all that much for a typical Monster Hunter entry so I'd still consider myself a bit of an outsider to the series. Wilds was fun, and playing it with other people made it even better. I'm definitely looking forward to playing the final game, and after a lot of indecision about where I'd be playing it (i.e. my PS5 or my PC) I I eventually settled on the Steam version.

I continued my Yakuza pilgrimage this month by playing the never-released-in-The-West Ryu Ga Gotoku Kenzan!. I needed to consult old guides from the Internet (and some translation apps on my phone) in order to play it, but I had a very good time. It feels like an evolution of what Yakuza 2 was doing, which makes sense, and it's a shame it never came out over here. I even made a video version of that blog post, in case anyone wanted to see the game in action. I started Yakuza 3 later in the month but I'm still pretty early on in that so it'll be a while before I finish that, especially with all of the Monster Hunter I'll (probably) be playing.
